Awesome addition
I have used this for several months with a 300mm 2.8 lens and a 70-200mm 2.8 lens. I photograph lots of birds in flight and have found little or no loss in sharpness of the image. I have to believe people who find problems with teleconverters may have other issues.

Exceptional
I have used this for several months. It has performed beyond my expectations. I find little or no loss of clarity in my images. I use all three teleconverters on a 300mm 2.8 and a 70-200mm 2.8 and couldn't be happier with the versatility they provide.

For what it is ,it does a good job
If you use the he TC1.7II properly it is a very good teleconverter. I use it with my 70-200mm f2.8 on my D90 which makes it equivalent to 200mm to 530mm lens.
For some the downsides are the lens is slower and the image not as sharp as when the teleconvertor is not used.I don't have $5K
for a 500mm lens and in most cases the image is acceptable with the teleconvertor.
To get best performance I shot my 70-200mm at a minimum of f5.6 or f 6.3 . If you set the lens to 180mm instead of 20mm the image is a little sharper. The TC1.4II gives a sharper image but less magnification. Remember to shoot at a minimum of 1/250 to 1/500 and you will get some great shots.

Moon and Space Shots Made Easy
I've used the TC-17E II for my Motor Sports photography and loved it. Fast, sharp, clear shots on both Auto Focus and Manual.
Then one night I set up in the yard to do some "Space Exploration." Wow! With my 200mm lens on the D700 I got photos of the Moon that were great. I also found several galaxies that I knew were there, but couldn't see. The best shot was all the details in Orion. I could pick out the M42 and M43 galaxies, Betelgeuse, Bellatrix and Rigel along with all the other stars that make up the constellation. The details were wonderful!

Works well
Got a 70-200 mm f.2.8 zoom objective and wanted to get just a bit closer. I saw another review where it was mentioned "it works well for what it is" and that reflects my experience as well.
Cannot see any difference in sharpness, but one thing I noticed when I wanted to see how my 70-200mm f.2.8 did without because I had seen a few comments then I immediately put the Teleconverter back in. The zoom with it has simply become a "cant live without".
So thumbs up for it.

Since it has an F mount it can be attach to your camera. However, not all lenses can be used with a teleconverter. In general wide angle lenses or wide angle zoom lenses cannot be used. Also, lenses with relatively slow maximum apertures (slower than f2.8) cannot be used with teleconverters.Answer:
Quite simply no, you cant. Some have tried to use a third party TC like the one from Kenco, the problem is that if you try and attach a TC there is a very good chance you will damage something, either the lens or tc or both, not to mention that if you did get one to work it would slow it right down to something in the region of a 5.9 - 9.5 which would pretty much well render is useless unless you had blazing sunshine to keep the shutter speed up.Has staff answer

Nikon makes 3 teleconverters, a 1.4x a 1.7x and a 2x. Adding a teleconverter increases the magnification, but also decreases the total light coming into the camera. Nikon cameras prior to the D4 and D800 require a maximum aperture of f5.6 or greater to autofocus properly. So, if you have a 300mm f2.8 lens, you can use any teleconverter and the camera will function properly. (f2.8 x 2 = f5.6) a f4 lens will work with the 1.4x teleconverter (f4 x 1.4 = f5.6), but but not the 1.7x or 2x, and so on. Do not use a teleconverter on wide zooms as the lens can damage the teleconverter. Although the teleconverters will function in manual focus mode on most lenses, they are primarily intended to be used with Nikon's long pro telephotos. While there are reports of teleconverters and autofocus working out beyond an effective maximum aperture of f5.6, proper performance should not be assumed. The teleconverter manual (available on line) basically implies that to use the 1.4x teleconverter the lens should be at least an f4, the 1.7x should be used with a lens faster than f3.3 and for the the 2x the lens should be faster than f2.8.Mar 26, 2012 by

The Teleconverter compatibility chart says that if the lens isn't listed on that page, then the rear element of the lens could damage the teleconverter. What I have seen is that on some lenses the diameter of the back of the lens is too small to allow the teleconverter to be inserted for mounting. This situation is obvious. However on some lenses, (like the 17-35 f2.8) the teleconverter will mount, but the rear element of the lens can crash into the teleconverter during zoom/focus... this is bad. In all cases (except for the D4 and D800) if the teleconverter factor (e.g. 1.7) times the f-stop exceeds f5.6, the lens may not autofocus properly. So since the maximum aperture of the 80-400 is 4.5, 4.5 x 1.7 = f7.65, so the lens will not autofocus even if everything else fits. Since the 80-400 is a current lens and it is not listed on the compatibility chart, my guess is it won't mount properly. Also the teleconverter does not have a linkage for a focusing motor, so only AFS or AFI lenses will autofocus...once more the 80-400 will not autofocus because it has no internal focusing motor. That's the long answer. The short answer is the 80-400 is not compatible.Mar 27, 2012 by

Simple answer is no, no and no to all of the above. None of these lenses are designed to have Tc's fitted to them and there is a very good chance that you will damage either the lens or tc if you tried to fit one.Some people have used the Kenco pro tc with varying results but if you went down this route you would do so at your own peril, not to mention the fact that any tc fitted to either of these lenses would slow them right up and no doubt lose af.
